Just came back to "revisit". It's a great site and have been able to reconnect with a couple of guys I spent a lot of time with back in the good old days. I was there Aug 31, 1966 (it was payday) through Feb 1968. Worked in the personnel shop w/Tom Bray and his predecessor SFC Bell. CW4 Harley I. Tollefson, then CW2 Murry. Both great men.
Thanks for your efforts. They have affected a lot of people - in a good way!

I have been to your site before (a couple of years ago) and just came back today. Thanks for the job you are doing on this. I see from the list of personnel by year that I am listed from 1964 to 1970. I was actually at the 83rd from 1969 to 1970, then transferred up to Udorn, the 5th, in 1970-71. If you are interested, I could dig through my files and see if I have any additional names. I see that there are two Barkleys on the list, but the one I served with (1969-71), Gene, is not one of them. Once again, thanks.

Nice Site! Was stationed at 5th RRU, Seri Court from Sept 1962 to Aug 3, 1964. I remember Gary Kay, Ted Sides(from Georgia), Roger Redmond, Herb Hoebleheinrich(from Minnesota), getting drunk at Susie's bar and her chasing me down at the end of the month to pay my tab!!! I was an 058.30 dittybopper, rank of Spec 5 when I left, I can remember the night when President Kennedy was killed, was getting on the bus at Seri Court, Sgt ? told us as we got on the bus. would love to hear from some of the oldtimers that were there when I was! Wow! did this site bring back memories. I arrived at the 5th RRU in dec 1962 and left on July 1965. Was a 286A intercept equiptment repairman. Spent 1963 in Chieng Mai & Ubon, then 18 months in Bangkok.I had such a good time that I extended my enlistment. When I moved here from NY three years ago after living in the same house for 30 years Ifound lots of 5th RRU stuff. I will have to dig it out again and get some pictures on this web site. I am now retired near grandchildren near Seattle. If anyone thinks they might remember me comes through or lives near by, I would love to buy them a Singha and exchange lies.

I was station at the 5th RRU from Jul 64 to Oct 66.

Congradulations on your web page, it is a great one and information on it brings back a lot of good memories.

I remember one funny incident that happen when I was there that no one has mentioned yet.

The LTC (Miller ??) who took over command from LTC Lum was in command when this incident happened.

Some general up the chain of command came up with the policy that if anyone asked you if you could do something, you were suppose to answer "CAN DO, Sir". LTC Miller like it so well that he instructed everyone in his command to answer questions with can do, sir.

A lot of troops though that it was rediculous and protested it by writing "cando" everywhere they could. This made the LTC mad, and he put out the word that anyone caught defacing goverment property with the word "cando" would be delt with severily.

This made a lot of troops madder, so they came up with there own plan. They reversed the spelling to "ODNAC", bought a goat, and sold shares in the goat. They had some cerfitcates printed up professionaly (very good quality, looked like bank certificates) that said words to the effect, this is one share in ODNAC and sold them. On the shares they wrote an agreement that said something like this: This is one share in ODNAC, don't be an ass and whine, sell this and get your dime like I got mine.

They had the goat at Seri-Court until someone got an idea that they should take it to the operations compound. Some how it got in the operations room and they were ordered to get rid of the goat which they did.

They then build a huge kite and named it "ODNAC". It was approximately 10 feet wide and 15 feet long. They decided to lanuched it at Seri-Court.

They had one man on each level of the operations building to pass the kite string (small rope) up to the top of the building. They launched it by pulling it down the street from the basketball/tennis court to the front of the operations building. They passed the control rope from floor to floor until they had it on the roof. They rigged a teletype motor up to wind the rope in and pull the kite down.

Murphy's law took over when the kite was out over Pratipat Road (not sure on the spelling). It is the road that Seri-Cour lane intersected with when you exited Seri-Court. They tried to wind it in and the rope broke. They said it came down on Pratipat Road and caused a taxi drive to wreck his cab.

Needless to say, that was the end of "ODNAC".

I was stationed at the 5th RRU, 64-65. I was a trick chief in the comm center. Made Sgt E-5, and left the army, Labor day weekend, at the Oakland Army terminal.
I took my wife on a three week trip to the far east and Australia, in 1999. Finding Seri Court, while in Bangkok. I found one of the house boys, and he got me in touch with my house boy, Sui Chin. He remembered me and my room mate Don Cole, my other "Band of Brothers". Garry Eakes, Gerry Lanzinger, and David Bosco, Sp4 when I knew him, retired Major. I have some great pictures of Sui chin, that I will try to get on to the web site. We also have some great pictures, when we played basketball, and softball for the great 5th RRU. We won the military Bangkok Championship, the winter of 1965. CWO Harley Tollefson was coach, and like a father to everyone on that team.

I was an 18year old Australian Army Serviceman attached to the RAAF(Royal Australian Air Force) at Ubon in February and March 1968. I was introduced to these US Army blokes in Ubon. They were Det J as I was to find out. What a great time I had with these guys. At 18 I didn't really know very much, I was like most guys my age full of bull and bravado. It was a wonderful experience for me and one that I have never forgotten.
The only names that I can recall from those days were Robert Georgi whose name I see in your pages. The other was a fella by the name of Alexander, whether that was his last or first name I can't be sure. But everyone called him "Axe".
I enjoy your site and have earmarked it for a return journey.

Great to find so many memories. I was in Bangkok and passed through the 83rd on my way upcountry to the 7th RRFS, where I remained for about six months. THis was in 1967. I was uo there working with Don Draper, a legend in the Lao linguists world for his skills, his ability to drink and the fact that he had been in country far longer than anyone else and probably longer than was good for the Army. Thanks for the site.

Thanks for the write up - but two things, first I was never stationed at the 3rd RRU. I'm glad my writing gave you the impression I had, but no, sorry. Second, I want as many men who were in ASA and the 5th to have a copy of my book, therefore, I am giving it to them for $15,00 (ten for book and five for shipping - I ship Priority Mail.) Hang in there, guys.

Was stationed at the 83rd in 1970 to Closing. Was there when the 83rd closed down. Was at the time called operation Sinking Ship for the closing of the 83rd, but the Major who came up with name was forced to change the name by the folks in Hawaii, since it showed disrecpect they felt to the Navy. Just a bit of trivia from the past. You have a great web site and do a fine service. Brings back a lot of memories.

I would love to hear from any of those guys (Jim Curry, Sam(Bird)Johnson,Stokley, James Garbett, Pete Marcias, Aguillar, others. The jungle had taken over the FLR-9, you could barely see the antennas above the trees. Opns building was falling down with water dripping from the ceilings and everything in a state of disrepair. It was really heartbreaking to see. I can't remember the website at present but if I locate it again I will pass it on.

The bus ride to the op center and that nasty old dog we used to call "the old man" Feeding the fish in the klong outside the op center. What a great 18 months they were. I don't know if you can add their names but George "GT" Taylor was there in 68 and so was Lenny "The Horny Dinosoar" Carter. You sure have put a lot into this site and it is appreciated. The picture of Col Rovegno was great He certainly has aged well and still looks great.

I've received a reply to the e-mail I sent to Warren Nobles account a few days ago. My e-mail was exactly the same as my comment here a few days ago regarding the death of Warren. His daughter replied:

"Dear Mr. Peterson,

This is Warren's daughter, Mary. I'll be cancelling his e-mail account shortly, but I wanted to check all the mail just in case there were still people who hadn't heard of his passing. It is very hard for me to delete this account because somehow it makes me feel connected to dad because there are so many people with so many stories about dad. It helps to keep his memory alive within me. On behalf of my mom, Alma, and I, thank you for the story that you shared to be posted on the website you mentioned. It was a little peice of trivia on my dad that I never knew (I guess he didn't either). Best wishes to you and your family.

Sincerely, Mary Noble"

As you likely already know MSG Warren Noble recently died. Here are some thoughts I had
a couple days ago prompted by a letter from Ron Coleman.

Warren Noble. I didn't know him well and really
only had three contacts with him. First was when I missed courier detail
because Rick Kovacs came in at 2 am and changed our alarm clock to the
time he needed to get up. I'd already set it to the earlier time I needed.
MSG Noble punished me by making me clear brush from along side the
operations compound access road. He asked me after a couple hours if
I'd learned anything from this experience. I said, "Yes, I won't stay in
the Army."

The second time was not really a face to face. It was when he had the swing
shifters stand in formation in the tennis court for an inspection. I quickly placed
my big speakers pointing toward the windows, cranked my Sansui amp up, and played
the US National Anthem. (That wasn't allowed due to the "status of forces"
agreement we had with the Thai government.) (Jim McNeice was my accomplice.)

Warren, didn't miss a beat. He had the troops, (can ASA people be properly be
thought of as troops?) facing my balcony and at "Present Arms" before the opening
drum roll finished. As soon as the last bar of the music stopped he dismissed the guys,
and ran up the three flights of stairs to try to catch whoever it had been.
I pulled the tape, locked it in a drawer, shut off the Akai, and put
the cover on. Both speakers were quickly moved back from the window, and by the time he got to
the third floor Jim and I were going down the opposite stairwell. He didn't have a clue where
the music had come from since he caught no one. I'm still impressed by how quick he was
getting those guys saluting. I hadn't expected that. I figured he'd just stand there
like a dummy. I wasn't really worried until I saw the salute. I knew we'd get our butts in trouble
if we got caught.

The third time was at a Christmas party at the house of Charlie Owens. We
only said Hi. I don't think he even know who I was. As I recall he had a charming
wife, and I learned that Warren was a nice guy.

Hung out in Bangkok for two days then rented a car and drove into the Northeast. Visited Khorat and the surrounding area for the very first time. It was great to get out of Bangkok and see some of the country side. Back to Bangkok for another day and then back to Manila for my one week check up. Eyes are fine and had a great time. Next trip to planned to the Philippines sometime later this year. Not sure if Thailand will be in the plan.

Great site!! Already found guys I know. At the 83rd from March of 69 til Sept of 70. Lived at Seri Court and later at the Green Villa. Worked Midnightz as an 05H and loved every minute of it! I was drinking with JW Hill the night he took the header off Seri Court. Hung out at the Office Bar, Bill Books Cellar Bar, and Dinos. What a country!!

I was stationed at the 7TH R.R.F.S. from September of
1970 til December of 1971 when I got out. I was in the
comm center at the operations building.

I have enjoyed your web site and am pleased to have been able to add to it with my pictures (which I hope you all enjoy) and copies of my old "orders" from which you got quite a few new names.
I was at Seri Court from January 1964 to December 1965. I separated from the Army in Bangkok and hung out for a while before going back to California and college. I worked in the Comm Center and was ultimately a Sgt E-5 and a "Trick Chief". The NCOIC of the Comm Center was Sgt Sexton, better know as "Pinky".
I had a motorcycle for most of the time that I was in Bangkok. First a Honda 50cc then a really cool Honda 150cc which was red with white sidewall tires.
The mess hall opened just prior to my departure and in my opinion was the beginning of the end. I only had a couple of meals in the mess hall then gave it up and continued to eat in restaurants until I left the Army. Couldn't handle bad roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravey at noon in the tropics after two years of great Thai food.
I have been back to Thailand about seven or eight times in the past ten years and it is still a GREAT town!!!!!
Seri Court is now a "Love Hotel" with curtains for the parking spaces so no one can see your car as you visit with your girlfriend. The Capital Hotel is now the Capital Condomunium. It surely is no longer the tallest building in the neighborhood. There are some interesing bars on Pradiphat Road. The new Skytrain solves many of the transportation problems that have plagued Bangkok for many years. There is even a Saphan Khwai station that is only a short walk from Seri Court.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who was in Bangkok while I was there.
Is anyone interested in a Seri Court reunion anytime in the not too distant future? As I live in Guam, only 6 air hours from Bangkok, I will make it there for sure.

Itchy trigger finger, I did not finish my first entry. Anyway, thanks again for the memories. You put together an excellent web page. I was an 05H at Seri Court from June 1966 - November 1969 and boy did we have fun. I sent you a separate email with a bit more detail about the last 30-plus years of my life. I would enjoy hearing from you. Warmest wishes to you, your family and the old gang for a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Best regards!!!

My father, Wallace J. Deicken was ASA Jan 61-Nov. 63 stationed in Bangkok, Thailand. I can't tell you what a thrill it was to see my father's picture and to read about your work in Thailand. I had heard stories from my mother and father about their time in Bangkok, but seeing my father's picture and the web-site really made an impact on me. Thank you for sharing all of this wonderful information with me.

Great memories and photos of a wonderful little place in the early days of my life. Thanks for the memories. I'll try to add some of my old pix later.
I volunteered for 5th RRU in Bangkok and arrived in May of 1963, only to be surplused (Thai government did not like too many American "spies") and sent to the 3rd RRU in Saigon. A week later I was issued an M2 Carbine (auto-selector) and 45 rounds of ammo and sent to Det. 1, 3rd RRU (Phubai) where there were about 65 of us and I learned how to sleep in a sandy bunk in 120 degree oven called a platoon tent. Talk about Paradise Lost!! But was fortunate to be able to extend and get back to Thailand. OUt of Service in May of 1965 just as the big buildup was going on.

I have been trying to find guys I was stationed with at H Company, Ft Devens, 8th RRFS, and Two Rock Ranch Station. I was at Devens the same time as you, in the same Company. I was a "night school" student. I recognized some names from your list; Balch, Baldwin, Semmler, Caldwell, Baur, Arce, Vannoy, Vaughn, Summersett, Kaaiakamanu, Baird, Bowman, Blount, Wildemuth. Our squad leader was SP4 John Wesley (Wes) Chase. Also with my group was Phillip B. DavidsonIII - son of Gen. Phillip Davidson, Ron Zeiner, Leonard Huff, Tom Stauffer, George Duggins, Onerdonk, Thomas Williams/White(?) 17 year old ham operator (had to stay at Devens until he turned 18, to join us at Phu Bai), and another guy whose name I can't remember - he was dark haired, skinny, and carried around a 6 string and 12 string guitar and played Beattle's songs and folk songs. There are many others, but my memory is really bad.

Got to Phu Bai in Apr66 or May66. Left Phu Bai in Jun68. Went to Two Rock Ranch Station in Aug68 and left there in Jun69. Several friends got orders to Thailand in January or February 1969. I was in Letterman Hospital, Presidio of CA, when we all came down on waiver. Of course I couldn't go, but the rest did. One was a tall light-skinned Black guy, with reddish hair and freckles. I remember his name being Chris something. I think Jim Curry was there, too.

Hi, My name is Jerry Kirby. My father (SFC Edwin A. Kirby) worked at the 83rd RRSOU in Bangkok. We arrived in January of 1970 and left in May of 1971. I did part of the 5th grade and most of the 6th at the International School of Bangkok. Dad retired from the Army in Oakland as soon as we got back. When we first arrived in Thailand, my father worked at Seri Court and we lived in the Capitol hotel waiting for our household goods to arrive. We then moved to 49/1 Soi 9, which was up (forgive me) Phrahoyotin?, on the other side of the Capitol hotel from the Liberty hotel. In fact, we were only a couple of blocks from the rear entrance of the Seri Court compound. I remember the Liberty hotel well as we ate dinner there every night both after arriving and then about three months before leaving. Also, during the time we lived on Soi 9, we went swimming at the Liberty almost every day. Not long before we left, what was left of the 83rd RRSOU moved to the 5th floor of the Capitol. My father literally walked about 40 feet down the hallway to work. A lot of my friends fathers worked at Deputy Chief (whatever that was) on the 6th floor. As I remember they had the whole floor and relatively serious security. My father worked for a Colonel name Fischer who left before we did. I seem to vaguely recall the Colonel was in some sort of trouble. Could be wrong about that one though. He also worked with a fellow named Schwimmer who went to Vietnam while we were there. My dad died in 1994 and never did talk much about his work. I do know he used to make regular trips to up north, I believe as a courier. It used to amuse me at how quiet and conspiratorial he would get when he told me what was at the time (twenty years later) the most inconsequential details of what he did, always with the warning not to repeat anything. He did take his clearance seriously. I have a thousand memories of Thailand including all the cool motorcycles parked out back at Seri Court. I was also old enough to understand what all the Thai girls were doing at the Liberty hotel with the guys on R&R. If this brings back memories for any dependents, I’d be happy to trade correspondence.

Lots of familiar places, names, and faces (including yours). I was assigned to the 5th RRU in Jun 65. Stayed in the Capital Hotel about a month before being reassigned to Det B at Ubon. Spend time on the same island in the Mun River. I left Ubon in Jan 67 for a tour with the 175th RRCo in RVN (another story). From Vietnam I returned to the 83rd RRSOU in Jan 68 and was put in charge of the Minburi DF site. Set up a new DF site at Phanom in 1969. I would have to dig out some old orders to get the exact date. Left the 83rd RRSOU in Jul 70. Remember Norman Wiswell, Charlie Gagnon, and Steve Wapple well. I'm sure I would remember more if I had a face to go with the name.

Hi, Richard - It's a terrific site, and thanks for the memories. Although I don't remember you, we were in the same places at roughly the same times, and your (old/young?) face rings a bell. I landed in Bangkok in January 66 as an 05D, where for a long time I worked with Charley Gagnon out at the Minburi(?) site. I made it to Ubon in January 67. Spent two years there. At that time we all lived in a a large house in an area off-linits to air force personnel. The house was run by Norman "Wiz" Wiswell, and we had a series of alcoholic NCO's in charge of the detachment. When we moved into that bungalow complex you mentioned, things changed like - we had to start getting haircuts and stuff. Some names not mentioned in your list (includeing my own) are: Bruce "Scotty" Cotham, Jack Reilly, James Garbett, Paul Matsuda, Joe Mace, and Denny Kopeck. There are a few others too. Later in my "military career" I worked with Dave Laforest at the Bangkok MARS station in JUSMAG. I'd like hearing from any of these guys and yourself, and thanks again for the site

I was at the 83rd in Bangkok 11/67-05/69 Mos 32G (Crypto Mech) Am looking for Lawrence "Mike" Austin. He was a 98C/ Thai linguist. Last saw him at Vint Hill Farms Station in 69-70. Last known address was in California around L.A. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who served in the 83rd during that time. Also trying to find Jerry "Jake" Fisher who worked in Signal Maintenance at the same time. He worked with John Kinnahan

Rich, Just got done sight-seeing on your website. Nice job. The Devens pics brought back memories. I was there from Sept of 67 to July of 68 when I finally left for Thailand. Why was the Ponderosa called the Ponderosa?? I forget. I think I was in Co C. I know we had a small woodworking shop across the road from our barracks and a hill that we would have beer parties on top of. Any how nice job. If I can be of any assistance let me know. Bill

Excellant site. I was at Devens about the same time as you were. I was also O5H20. Funny thing, I went to High School with one of your classmates ( Dave LaForest ) at St. Ambrose here in Detroit MI. I landed in Bangkok in July of 1966, spent one night and was sent up to Udorn (Tent City ). On my way back home in July of 67 I met up with Dave in Bangkok we got to visit, took some photos and I havn't seen nor heard from him since. I also new Kuroda & Soto from Udorn. I left Udorn with my next duty Station being Bad Aibling Germany. It was great duty but I missed Thailand. I got to know many of the locals and really enjoyed the country. Have you had any contact with LaForest ? Hope to hear from you. Thanks again for a good site. ( ... -.- ).

Richard: I spent over an hour viewing your past life through words and pictures. Your website gave me a wonderful historic view of a person I knew little of and of who I now know a great deal more about. Thanks, it is great. I passed the site on to my brother-in-law Bob Elliot who was a second lieutenant in country.

Super site, Rich! Brings back a lot of good memories. We'll have to talk more. Thanks for contacting me. Over the years, I've often wondered what became of all the guys I knew. Ever think about putting a reunion together?

Terrific site! Some of the pages weren't working, so I'll keep checking back. I was there April 66 to Sep 68. You, Del Wright, Super Andy, Popovich, Joiner -- you guys wouldn't give up and it sure made a difference.

Not too shabby. It's coming along well. There are a lot of pictures I've never seen before... especially of my dumb sister.

My military career followed a similar path - from basic to Bangkok. I was an 058 there from July 65 to December 66. It really bothers me that I don't remember you during our common 6 month interval. I worked steady afternoon shifts 6 days on - 3 days off usually spent at Pataya. I guess I was a short timer and you were probably viewed as a NUG, so we never associated. Great site - although those photos would have probably gotten you arrested at the time you took them. I also have a large quantity of B&W photos from Seri Court and Bangkok. Nice site - enjoyed the Devens pictures - looked the same way when I was there from December 64 - June 65. Tim Heimel
